The network is provided to staff to conduct research and communicate with others. Personal use by staff will be allowed outside of work hours as long as it does not interfere with school-related use of the network and conforms to the district acceptable use policy. The following behaviors are not permitted on district networks:

1. Distributing network passwords to district employees or other persons that do not have a current acceptable use form on file.

2. Distributing network passwords to students.

3. Sharing confidential information on students or employees.

4. Sending or displaying offensive messages or pictures.

5. Assisting in a campaign for election of any person to any office or for the promotion of or opposition to any ballot proposition.

6. Using obscene language.

7. Harassing, insulting or attacking others.

8. Behavior that might damage computers, computer systems, computer networks, or data (for example, loading files that may introduce a virus).

9. Loading software downloaded from the internet on district computers without permission of the IT Department.

10. Violating copyright laws.

11. Using other's passwords or sharing an individual's password.

12. Trespassing in others' folders, work or files.

13. Intentionally wasting limited network resources.

14. Attempting unauthorized access to computer systems, networks, or data.

15. Employing the network for commercial purposes.

16. Violating the rules and regulations prescribed by other organizations for the use of their network or resources.

17. Using P2P networks such Limewire, Frostwire, Bearshare, Napster, BitTorrent, etc. (iTunes is not considered a P2P and its use is permitted): P2P networks, when working correctly, allow groups to share information online, such as software, music, videos and documents. The openness of these networks, however, can leave sensitive data available to people and open the entire network to intrusions, viruses, spamming and crashing.

18. Adding any network equipment without the permission of the IT Department.

19. Users shall report any security problem or misuse of the services to the Superintendent or IT Department. This includes any attempts to bypass, interfere with, or subvert any content filtering system implemented or adopted by SCOE/OAUSD. Employees should not open emails or attachments or respond to correspondence from unknown sources. Even if you know the sender, do not open any email attachment that has a strange name or is not referenced in the body of the email -- it may have been transmitted automatically, without the sender's knowledge. If you believe your computer has been infected by a virus, worm, or other security threat to the system, you must form the IT Department immediately. User recognizes that the communication on OAUSD computers and through a OAUSD email address, even when used remotely, could reflect upon OAUSD.

Some inappropriate uses of the network can be a violation of local, state and federal laws and you can be prosecuted for violating those laws. Any violation may result in access privileges being revoked and disciplinary actions.
