Thermalize Juneau Registration Form - Previously Applied for Assessment
If you have already applied for or received an Alaska Heat Smart Heat Pump Assessment, please complete the short form below to register for Thermalize Juneau.

Thermalize Juneau is a pilot bulk purchasing project for heat pumps and other energy efficiency retrofits being organized by Alaska Heat Smart, the Cold Climate Housing Research Center, Information Insights, AEL&P, Renewable Juneau and SEABIA. The goal of the Thermalize Juneau project is to reduce upfront costs and other technical barriers, leading to an increase the number of heat pumps and other energy efficiency measures installed in Juneau.

You are not making a financial commitment to purchase anything at this stage. After completing this form, you are only signaling that you would like to be given the option to use the template bulk purchase contract once it becomes available.

The following items will be available through the Thermalize Juneau bulk purchase:
 - Single head mini-split air source heat pump
 - Air sealing and ventilation
 - Attic insulation
 - Crawlspace vapor barriers, insulation, and ventilation

You may choose either just the heat pump, or the heat pump in addition to any of the energy efficiency measures. We are restricting the bulk purchase to these items to keep the program simple, and because we have found that they provide the greatest return on investment for the typical Juneau building. Because of this, your individual goals may or may not be entirely met by this suite of options. If so, you can either supplement your contract with additional options (ex. another head on the heat pump), or you can contract outside of Thermalize entirely.

In addition, you can apply for the program if you already have a heat pump, but the only option available will be an additional interior head and exterior compressor unit rather than additional heads attached onto your existing exterior compressor unit.

The project will take place in multiple phases over the course of the next few months. The tentative timeline for these phases is:
1) February - March: Thermalizers complete this registration form, submit energy bills, and fill out an anonymous optional initial survey to enroll in the program.
2) February - June: Thermalizers receive heat pump assessments and an optional energy audit.
3) April - June: After receiving their heat pump assessments and energy audits, Thermalizers will signal what measures they are interested in purchasing. Alaska Heat Smart and the Thermalize Juneau partners will then select contractors through a competitive bidding process.
4) July - October: Thermalizers confirm their desired retrofits, receive a quote from a heat pump installer and/or energy efficiency contractor chosen from the contractor selection process, and choose to sign an individual contract with the installer and/or contractor. Installations occur soon after.

To participate in Thermalize Juneau, interested households will need to:

Thermalize Juneau is Alaska’s FIRST Thermalize campaign. The organizing team is working very hard to make the campaign as seamless as possible. We are also hoping to use this experience to inform future thermalize campaigns in Juneau, Alaska, and other cold climate communities. To this end, our team has a Department of Energy grant to track the energy savings and other benefits of Thermalize Juneau, to assess how economical this program is in helping the City and Borough of Juneau reach its renewable energy goals, and to document the parts of the program that don’t run as smoothly.

Participants will notice this “research” component in three ways. First, we’ll collect energy bills. We do this anyway, to help with heat pump assessments, but in this campaign we’ll also collect energy bills for one year post-retrofit. Second, we’ll ask every participant to fill out two surveys, one at the start of the program, and one in summer of 2022. These surveys are anonymous. The first one will take approximately 10 minutes to fill out, and everyone who fills it out will be eligible for a $20 gift card to a local coffee shop as well as an entry into a raffle for a $200 gift card. Finally, many homes in the program will receive an energy audit at no cost. You can learn more about the energy audit during your Alaska Heat Smart assessment.

Because this portion of the project is federally funded, aggregated data with no private identifiers will be made public through reports and flyers. If you have any questions about the research component of this campaign, please contact Vanessa Stevens (vanessa.stevens@nrel.gov).
