JOIN US FOR CARERS WEEK!
To celebrate Carers Week 2021, we are holding a series of zoom events as part of our SWAP’ra Café. Join us to meet other carers in the classical music industry. It’s so valuable to be able to chat to others in similar situations, and to share advice and support.
Please sign up for one or more of the sessions using this form and see the information on our sessions listed below:
FOR CARERS OF ELDERLY RELATIVES
MONDAY 7 JUNE - 10:00AM-11:30AM - with guest speakers Will Kerley (director), Alice Hulett (soprano), Emilia Benjamin (violinist)
A session for those with elderly or infirm relatives, to talk about the challenges of caring for them, whether that is a day-to-day responsibility, or an anxiety that you deal with from afar. Come and join others in similar situations to share your thoughts and support.
FOR CARERS OF PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES AND SPECIAL NEEDS
TUESDAY 8 JUNE - 10:00AM-11:30AM - with guest speakers Catherine Hopper (mezzo) and Colin Judson (tenor) and Vicky Cowles (saxophonist)
This is the third session we have run to support those who care for neurodiverse or physically disabled people. Catherine cares for her adult sister, Rachel, who is learning disabled. Colin’s son, Morgan has special educational needs and development issues, and Vicky’s young daughter is a wheelchair user. We’ve had wonderful feedback from participants in our previous sessions, from people who’ve never had the chance to speak to other musicians and artists who understand these caring responsibilities.
THE BIG JUGGLE!
WEDNESDAY 9 JUNE - 10:30am-12:00pm - with guest speakers Lucy Crowe (soprano), Leigh Melrose (baritone) Soraya Mafi (soprano) and Anthony Gregory (tenor)
How do we balance the needs of our family with an opera career?
FOR PARENTS OF TEENAGERS AND STUDENTS
THURSDAY 10 JUNE - 10:00am-11:30am - with guest speakers Jeni Bern (soprano), Richard Burkhard (baritone), Jennifer Johnston (mezzo) and Kitty Whately (mezzo).
The past 18 months have been incredibly tough on teenagers and young people in these unprecedented times. This age group brings its own set of challenges for parents and the sleepless nights are by no means over. This session will focus supporting our teens and young adults.
FOR SINGLE PARENTS
FRIDAY 11 JUNE - 8:30pm-10:00pm - with guest speakers Becky Bottone (soprano) and Mary Bevan (soprano)
Parenting is hard enough for working parents, but for those who are doing it alone, things are extra challenging, particularly over the past year. Join us to share your experiences of running your family alone alongside your career in performing arts.

SWAP’ra Café Code of Conduct
SWAP’ra (charity no. 1185454) exists to effect positive change for women and parents in opera. Our vision is of an environment where women and parents are enabled to thrive professionally, where women are evenly represented in all job roles across the opera industry, and where no one feels they have to choose between professional success and family life.
Our aim at SWAP’ra Café is to offer an inclusive, welcoming and respectful space where women, parents and carers can express their ideas and thoughts and offer practical peer support as we share our positive experiences and some of the challenges of working in opera. Mutual respect, even where opinions might differ, is an essential principle.
We ask that everyone respects SWAP’ra’s values, vision and ethos while participating in SWAP’ra Cafe. This is a fundamental principle and, where necessary, we will deny entry to any individual whose words or actions undermine our ethos.
