To Spray or Not to Spray
In municipalities around the world, calcium chloride is used as an effective tool to prevent ice on roadways.

When applied in high volumes, the chemical composition of this product poses a reported environmental risk and has the potential to cause rust and other damage to vehicles and municipal infrastructure, including underground sewers. Consequently, City Council voted in 2019 to discontinue the use of calcium chloride on Edmonton roads.

Calcium chloride continues to be used by the Government of Alberta as a vital winter maintenance tool on Anthony Henday Drive and the City of Edmonton continues its use on some active transportation infrastructure (shared-use paths, bike lanes, etc.).

Earlier this year, a City Councillor requested that administration investigate the possibility of resuming the use of calcium chloride to manage icy conditions. This request stems from the more frequent freeze/thaw cycles being experienced as a result of climate change.

Ahead of a potential debate on the matter, Councillor Parmar wants to hear from residents in Ward sipiwiyiniwak. Please share your thoughts on the use of calcium chloride on city streets by completing this quick survey.
