Senator Chris West's District 42 Senatorial Scholarship Program *Deadline is April 1, 2025*

Welcome to the Senatorial Scholarship Application process, an initiative proudly presented by Senator Chris West to support the educational aspirations of residents within the 42nd Legislative District of Maryland.

To begin, it's essential to confirm your eligibility. As a fundamental requirement, applicants must be residents of the 42nd Legislative District. You can verify your residency by using your FAFSA address at the Maryland State Archive’s website, http://mdelect.net. Additionally, please ensure that your FAFSA or Maryland State Financial Aid Application is completed online by the deadline of March 1, 2025.

Application Requirements: To apply, submit the completed application form, your most recent transcript, three letters of recommendation (academic or professional), a copy of your FAFSA’s Student Aid Report or the MSFAA Summary Report, and if you are a high school student, your SAT/ACT scores.

It's important to understand that the Senatorial Scholarship is primarily intended for students attending educational institutions within Maryland. The scholarship aims to support our state's educational establishments and, in turn, our local students. However, I recognize that some academic paths may lead out of state. Therefore, if your chosen major is not offered within Maryland, you must secure unique major status from the Maryland Higher Education Commission. This status is a prerequisite for receiving our scholarship for studies at out-of-state institutions. Without this unique major status, I am unable to award scholarships for attendance at non-Maryland schools.

The Senatorial Scholarships are awarded to both undergraduate and graduate students for up to four years or until the completion of your degree, whichever comes first. The scholarships are renewed annually, contingent on you maintaining a minimum of six credit hours per semester. Please note, the amount of the scholarship is fixed upon award and cannot be increased in subsequent years. The average yearly scholarship award typically ranges between $400 and $800, depending on available funds and the number of recipients. It's important to understand that the duration of the scholarship aligns with your remaining years in college, whether that's one year or up to four.

A bipartisan committee from the 42nd Legislative District, comprising three Republicans and three Democrats, is responsible for selecting the recipients of these scholarships. Their decisions are based on a combination of academic achievement and financial need. Final decisions will be made by June 1, 2025, and recipients will be notified promptly thereafter.

Should you have any queries or require further information about the application process or the scholarship itself, do not hesitate to contact my Chief of Staff, Marc Lazerow, at mlazerow@senate.state.md.us. We are here to assist you through every step of this process.

In closing, please remember that holding a Senatorial Scholarship does not exclude you from also receiving an Educational Assistance Grant. I encourage you to explore all available avenues to support your educational journey.

I eagerly anticipate your application and am committed to supporting the academic endeavors of our constituents in the 42nd Legislative District.

Sincerely,

Senator Chris West
42nd Legislative District
