Trail Policy Survey for Santa Barbara County
We are evaluating the current state of trail planning, permitting, designing, funding, building, and maintaining in Santa Barbara County to help inform and shape the Countywide Recreation Master Plan (https://www.sbcrecplan.com/).

One of our goals is to identify ways to improve policies and practices to expand and improve the trail network across the county. We will also develop a list of action items that will enhance the quantity and quality of trails in the region.

Your answers will be anonymous.

Here are a few definitions:

• MULTI-USE TRAILS: These are typically away from vehicular roads that are primarily recreational in nature but can also serve as an alternative mode of transportation. They are unpaved surface facilities for single or multiple uses by pedestrians, equestrians, and mountain bicyclists.

• PATHWAYS: These are non-motorized transportation facilities located within a parkway or road right of way (ROW). A riding and hiking trail located in the road right of way is considered a pathway. They are unpaved surfaced facilities intended to serve both circulation and recreation purposes.

• MULTI-MODAL PATHS: These are typically away from vehicular roads that are primarily recreational in nature but can also serve as an alternative mode of transportation. They are paved facilities for single or multiple uses by pedestrians and bicyclists.

Note: This survey was developed by Santa Barbara County Trails Council with input from members of regional trail committees, NGOs, and others. The results of this survey will be shared with the Countywide Recreation Master Plan leadership. Implementation of any proposed policy or action item is not guaranteed. This survey is for educational purposes only.
