Application to Participate for Artists
Souls Shot: Portraits of Victims of Gun Violence
This call is open to all artists over 18 working in any media. Accepted participating artists will create a portrait, as defined below, of a victim of gun violence. Artists who have already created such a work are invited to exhibit that work. The definition of portrait is to be broadly interpreted. The goal is to present diverse works that in some way relay graphically or in narrative the essence of the person being portrayed. Artists will be paired with the family or friend of a victim or they may propose a portrait of someone already known to them.

Works must be properly prepared for exhibition. 2D work should be wired for hanging. 3D work must be stable. Video work must be clearly set up for display. The works must be no larger than 50” in any direction and no more than 100 lbs. Exceptions may be considered. Exhibition space is limited so the participants will be first come first served. Applicants will also be juried for quality and professionalism of their work.

20% commission will be collected on sales and will be donated directly to Heeding God’s Call to End Gun Violence. Work does not need to be for sale. In the past, many artists have given the portraits to the families of the victims. THE PORTRAITS WILL BE THE SOLE PROPERTY OF THE ARTIST AND THE DECISION TO PLACE IT UP FOR SALE OR GIVE THE PORTRAIT TO ANYONE IS ENTIRELY THE DECISION OF THE ARTIST. Souls Shot: Portraits of Victims of Gun Violence and Heeding God’s Call to End Gun Violence are not to be involved in that decision or transaction. Artists must communicate clearly with their families about this. The families/friends of the victims will be presented with a color print of the portrait and will have signed a participation agreement in which the above stipulations have been laid out.

Accepted artists will sign a waiver allowing the portrait to travel with the exhibition. The goal is to have the exhibition travel to as many venues as possible, most likely for a full calendar year. To this end, artists must deliver or ship work in STURDY containers that can be reused while the exhibition is traveling.

Accepted artists will sign a waiver allowing their portrait's image to be used in promotional materials.

Accepted artists will provide a value for their portrait for insurance purposes. NOTE that venues do not always insure the works.

IF YOU ARE SELECTED TO CREATE A PORTRAIT AND PAIRED WITH A VICTIM'S FAMILY, PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS IS A MEANINGFUL COMMITMENT. YOU MUST BE WILLING TO FULLY COMMIT TO WORKING WITH THE FAMILY AND MEETING DEADLINES SET OUT IN THE AGREEMENT. If you would like to talk to an artist who participated in the first exhibition, contact us at soulsshotportraitproject@gmail.com.

There is a $10 application fee.
