The City of Knoxville Tree Maintenance Registry is free to register and is required by City of Knoxville code (14-39) of ordinances. The purpose to this registry to to ensure all tree maintenance companies operating within the City agree to not place any wood waste or material at the street and agree to follow the rules and regulations for tree work operations within the City of Knoxville.

Sec-14-39 Tree Maintenance and Registry

All individuals or companies intending to do tree work for hire on any tree over twelve (12) inches in diameter at one (1) foot off the ground within the city, must register with the City Public Service Department urban forester.

It is the responsibility of the tree company/individual for hire, and not the property owner, to remove the wood waste from the property and properly dispose of the debris/material. Disposal of wood material by placing it at the street/city right-of-way for collection will be considered illegal dumping/litter per article VI of the Solid Waste Ordinance (chapter 13). Individuals or companies in violation of this registry or improperly disposing of wood waste are subject to a stop work order, fines, and/or prohibited from doing any work in the City of Knoxville until registration is completed and/or wood waste is removed.

Failure to correct the violation within the time allotted will result in fines to the company/individual for hire and not the property owner as outlined in sections 13-145, 13-146, and 13-147 of the Solid Waste Ordinance and section 14-39 of the Tree Protection Ordinance.

It shall be unlawful for any person, or contractor to remove or perform any maintenance on any tree on City property without written approval by the Urban Forester. Topping of trees located on City property or within the street right-of-way is prohibited per section 14-60 of the Tree Protection Ordinance..
