NORTH BERWICK TRUST NATURE PARK -  a place for our community, for wildlife and for the planet.
Imagine a place rich in wildlife, full of natural colours, sounds and smells, providing a refuge for people and wildlife. A place where North Berwick residents can discover the natural world, engage in volunteering activities and develop a strong sense of community.

North Berwick Trust has converted 16 hectares of farmland on the south side of the town into just such a space - a community green space for people and wildlife. Where people will be able to walk, exercise, play and volunteer away from their busy modern lives.  Situated near North Berwick Law, Marsh and Glen, it forms an important part of North Berwick’s green network, connecting active travel routes, enhancing local landscape features, and providing wildlife habitats.

North Berwick Trust would like to manage the Nature Park for:

·        Nature Conservation - creating important wildlife habitats, such as wetlands, wildflower meadows, woodland and scrub.

·        Recreational Use - providing a natural space to participate in quiet recreation, compatible with nature conservation, such as walking, exercise and nature study.

·        Educational Use - engaging, nurturing and inspiring the North Berwick community to learn about, and care for their natural environment.

·        Community Involvement - providing a place for the community to meet, volunteer and connect with nature.

The North Berwick Trust now wish to consult with the local community and develop a 5-year Management Plan setting out how the Nature Park should be managed for the benefit of residents of North Berwick. The park is currently used for informal public recreation. Six small areas are planted with mixed tree species and the rest is grassland with mown paths making it accessible for walkers.  The intention is that future proposals will be sustainable and enhance the natural environment as well as create a greenspace for physical activity and well-being, while being practicable and affordable.  An area on the north side is allocated as employment land (shown on the map) and is outwith the Nature Park. This could be used for general industrial and business/office use, storage and distribution, business parks and specialist technology parks. The Trust is currently considering options and a further consultation about this area will be conducted in due course.

Each of the four management themes are introduced below and various questions are posed. Please feel free to comment, answer the questions and raise new ideas and proposals. Responses to this consultation document should be completed by 21st July 2021.
