Behavioral Euthanasia as a Solution to The Overcrowded Shelter Problem
Students at the University of Idaho are running some polls to gauge overall public opinion on topics under the discussion of behavioral euthanasia and shelter overcrowding. This is for our CAPStone research project in AVS4500 - Issues in Animal Agriculture.

These questions may be potentially biased in nature but we have done our best to formulate questions to be as absolute (polarizing) as possible to answer for ease of analysis.

Public participation in this questionnaire, and therefore data collection, is completely optional and not incentivized. Answers are anonymous. You can answer as many or as few questions as you would like. We appreciate your time if you do decide to help us by answering a couple!

Do you believe that overcrowding of shelters is a current serious issue?
* Think globally, not just in your area!
Clear selection
Do you believe aggressive dogs may currently be residing in animal shelters?
Please think of “long-stay residents” (1+ years) for reasons such as displaying past aggressive tendencies, as well as dogs that may not be successfully placed in homes with other animals or children due to territorial behaviors when answering.

These dogs may be overlooked as potential candidates for behavioral euthanasia, when they may be euthanized for these traits elsewhere.

Do you believe behavioral euthanasia is ethical in some scenarios? (Please think in absolutes.)
“Behavioral euthanasia is the term used for humanely ending a dog’s life because of severe behavioral issues. This is not usually related to physical health, and it’s not about nuisance behavior like pulling on leash or jumping on guests.” (AKC)

Do you believe, in general, that behavioral euthanasia may be misused in shelters with or without overcrowding?
Clear selection
Do you believe behavioral euthanasia in shelters may be subject to bias?
This may be generalized as the labeling and potential euthanization of frequently ill-perceived breeds due to breed aggression because of shelter volunteer bias towards certain dog breeds, despite the dog not being a “true/good” candidate for behavioral euthanization. This mislabeling may be purposeful or subconscious in nature.

* This may also be mislabeling aggressive dogs as not aggressive due to bias for the breed (such as someone who owns a golden retriever labeling a golden retriever as non-aggressive to prevent BE.)
