Inclusive conservation mapping registration form
On Friday, December 4th from 9:30 - 11:00 AM, join Jacob Freedman, senior at Middlebury College, for this interactive workshop to learn about the biases inherent in maps today and what changes can be made to build a more inclusive conservation movement. In this workshop geared towards anyone using or making maps in the conservation field, we will uncover the origins of many conservation mapping practices, explore the ways in which these can perpetuate unjust environmental narratives, and identify tangible actions to make maps more cognizant of diverse human and natural experiences. Feedback and findings from this workshop will be included in Jacob’s Senior Thesis about designing more inclusive conservation mapping practices. Participants will be invited to join a follow-up interview for additional reflections. Please contact jafreedman@middlebury.edu with any questions or comments.

Study Title: Inclusive Conservation Mapping
Investigator: Jacob Freedman
Consent to Participate in Research

This is a consent form for participation in a research project. Your participation in this research project is voluntary. The consent form contains information about the study and what to expect if you decide to participate. Feel free to email jafreedman@middlebury.edu to ask questions before making your decision whether or not to participate.

Summary of the research
You are being asked to participate in a study about creating more inclusive maps for environmental conservation goals. The study will be conducted throughout fall 2020 and winter 2020-2021. You will be asked to participate in a workshop and provide feedback and thoughts in a one-on-one interview. The workshop will take 1 hour and 15 minutes, and the post-workshop interview will take 30 minutes. There is some risk that some of the questions may make you uncomfortable by examining underlying biases.

What will happen if I take part in this research?
The purpose of this research is to learn about the legacy of bias in conservation maps and how conservation practitioners can make more inclusive maps. To this aim, you will be asked to participate in a workshop to learn about mapping bias. This workshop will feature interactive questions, discussions, and feedback that will be used towards the aims of this research. You will have the opportunity after the workshop to participate in a one-on-one interview to debrief what you took away from this workshop. With your permission, Jacob Freedman would like to make an audio recording of this workshop and one-on-one interview to make an accurate transcript. Your name will not be used in the transcript. You are free to discontinue your participation at any time. You will be one of 10 to 50 people to participate in this research.

All of your responses will be confidential and only Jacob Freedman and his thesis advisers will have access to these data. The data will be used over the next six months, although they will be retained indefinitely for the research team’s records. Because of the nature of these data, it may be possible to identify you, however, there will be no attempt to do so and these data will not be reported in a way that would identify you.

Will my study-related information be used for future research?
Jacob Freedman may remove information that identifies you from the dataset so that the dataset can be shared with other investigators for future research. You will not be asked to provide consent to share your de-identified data.

Who can answer my questions about this study?
If you would like more information about this research, you can contact Jacob Freedman, Candidate for B.A. in Environmental Studies-Geography at jafreedman@middlebury.edu. Questions about your rights as a research subject should be directed toward the Institutional Review Board at irb@middlebury.edu.

I have read and I understand the above. I have been offered a copy of this informed consent form. I am over 18 years old and voluntarily agree to participate in this study.
