JAZZ YOUTH SUMMIT APPLICATION

The Ottawa Jazz Festival is proud to announce AUDITIONS for this summer’s Jazz Youth Summit Ensemble.

This ensemble will feature nine musicians aged 23 and under (as of May 10, 2024). Selected individuals will have full access to the festival and will hone their skills in improvising and arranging their own material for a period of 6 days during the jazz festival, through daily rehearsals and masterclasses with visiting artists, ending in a main-stage performance on June 30th. This Ottawa Jazz Festival program has a long history of working with many of the finest young players who now are featured performers around the globe. This year, the ensemble will welcome back director Mike Tremblay for a second term.

Participants will be chosen by committee based on musical ability and artistic merit. 

All instruments are welcome.

Audition Requirements

Applicants are asked to submit links (e.g. Youtube, Vimeo) to unedited video recordings of the following:


Brass, Woodwind, vocals, piano, bass – 3 tunes

A) 12-bar blues, melody of your choice, and between two and three choruses (12 bars each chorus) of an unaccompanied solo, i.e. no backing tracks allowed

B) Lady Bird, melody and two or three choruses of a solo, with backing track

C) A piece of your choice to highlight your strengths (original composition, performance footage, your project, anything you would like us to hear)


Drums – 3-4 recordings

A) Straight-ahead swing feel over 16 bars, then a 16 bar solo

B) Latin feel over 16 bars, then solo for 16 bars

C) Straight 8th feel over 16 bars, then solo for 16 bars
