In class we have been learning about FUNCTION and PERFORMANCE, our first two design factors. We have learned that a product's function is what the product DOES (it's job, in other words). We discovered that most products have a primary function and a secondary function.

We have also learned that a high-PERFORMANCE product performs its function very well. A high performance product has the best MATERIALS, the best BUILD QUALITY, is easy to MAINTAIN and keeps the user SAFE.

The primary function of a PENCIL is to write. The secondary function is to erase mistakes. A high performance pencil is made from strong wood which keeps hold of the lead and the eraser. The same pencil is easy to sharpen and clean, and doesn't contain harmful chemicals.
