Mansergh Faculty Scientific Research Award
Established in 2018 through a generous gift from Gordon Mansergh ’84, the Mansergh Faculty Scientific Research Award encourages and recognizes outstanding faculty research publications and grant funding awards in the social sciences, life and physical sciences, and mathematics. Such achievements contribute to the scholarly reputation of both the faculty and Gustavus Adolphus College.

Award: An honorarium of $2,000 will be presented at the May Faculty Meeting.
Eligibility: Up to three awards will be funded annually.
  • Open to all Gustavus Adolphus College faculty in the social sciences, life and physical sciences, and mathematics.
  • Two categories of scholarship are eligible for consideration:
  • 1) Peer-Reviewed Article: Published in a scholarly journal within the current or preceding two calendar years; first authorship by the nominee is required.
  • 2) Research Grant Acquisition: Secured within the current or preceding two calendar years; nominee must be the lead Gustavus investigator and primary contributor to the grant proposal. Grants from primarily political or religious advocacy entities are not eligible.
Evaluation Criteria:
  • For publications: importance of the subject matter, contribution to the field, and scholarly stature and impact of the journal.
  • For grant acquisitions: significance of the subject matter, contribution to the field, and scholarly stature of the granting agency or foundation.
  • Preference will be given to individuals who have not received the award in the past three years. (A list of past winners is available.)
  • In the rare case of less than exceptional nominations in one category, multiple awards may be given in the other. In the absence of exceptional nominations, no award may be granted.
Nominations: Faculty are invited to submit either a peer-reviewed publication or a research grant award for consideration, along with a brief description of how the work meets the evaluation criteria above. Self-nominations and re-nominations are welcome. Nominations are due annually by March 15.
