Mental Health Presentations - school-wide
Ghosted and Minding Your Mind 

7th & 8th Grade: Wangenheim Middle School has a very important program called Ghosted, presented by Kaiser Permanente that will be presented in the Auditorium. Ghosted project aims to educate youth around Mental Health issues. Through this program, students learn to:
- Combat stigma by normalizing mental health challenges
- Develop skills to talk about stress, anxiety, depression, and suicide prevention
- Identify coping strategies to build resilience
- Access resources for help

Minding Your Mind

6th Grade: To further enhance our mental health education, we are bringing in a program called Changing Minds: Stories Over Stigma featuring Young Adult Speakers from a nonprofit mental health education foundation called Minding Your Mind for students. During this educational presentation, students will hear from a young adult who has experienced a mental health challenge, developed healthy coping skills, and shares a message of hope that support is available. This evidence-based program is aimed at ending the stigma around mental health challenges and conditions while encouraging students to seek help for themselves or a friend as early as possible. Our Counselors will continue to be available to any student seeking support before, during, and after this presentation.

California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS) - in 7th grade

7th grade students are asked to be a part of our school’s California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS), sponsored by the California Department of Education (CDE). This is a very important survey that will help promote better health and well-being among our youth. The survey gathers information on developmental supports provided to youth; school connectedness and barriers to learning, as well as behaviors such as physical activity and nutritional habits; alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use; and school safety. The results from this survey are compiled into the district- and county-level CHKS Reports. To view a copy of your district’s report, go to https://calschls.org/reports-data/search-lea-reports/ (Outside Source) and type in the district name.

THE CALIFORNIA HEALTHY YOUTH ACT – EDUCATION CODE §§ 51930 ‐ 51939 COMPREHENSIVE SEXUAL HEALTH AND HIV PREVENTION EDUCATION

California state law, the California Healthy Youth Act, requires that comprehensive sexual health and HIV prevention education be provided to students at least once in middle school. The California Healthy Youth Act, corresponding CA Education Code, and other instructional resources can be found on the Sexual Health Education Program’s website: www.sandiegounified.org/SHEP.

Instructional materials are available to preview by parents/guardians online. Deadline to opt-out will be the Friday before lessons begin in May. Teachers are communicating directly about start dates.
