Travel volunteers play a vital role in our mission. They are the ones that make the books come alive for children that may have never seen a picture book before.
As a small non-profit organization, Books for a Better World buys and deliver new children's books to over 100 schools and libraries in remote locations of Central America. As a travel volunteer you will travel in a group of 2-4 people, where at least 1 person has prior experience traveling with Books for a Better World. Together, you will go to schools, read to the children, engage them in the reading process, and help encourage the teachers to do the same. This will often involve long rides in cars, trucks, or buses, on roads that at times can barely be called roads. You will most likely stay with a host family, or in a simple hotel/hostel, which may have limited access to amenities such as internet, air-conditioning, hot water, etc.
Volunteers will be responsible for collecting small amounts of data on each school/library, should plan on sharing photos with Books for a Better World and on social media, and will need to put together a short trip report to be sent to the board after they return.
