Parent Power Fellows Interest Form Spring '26
The goal of Parent Power is to help families gain the tools and information needed to be able to boost or start an organized parent group, gain a deeper understanding of the systems and procedures that guide schools and how to advocate for the schools our students deserve, when needed.

Fellows will need to attend Mondays 5:30-7:30 April 13 - May 18, put in organizing time and take part in hosting parent meetings at your school.  The total fellowship stipend is up to $500. 

Session descriptions

Session 1: Why parents and educators need to work together. We will explore a study of over 600 stakeholders on the key issues in schools. We found that parents and teachers generally agree on what the main problems are but also tend to see each other as responsible for the underlying causes. This tension between the staff and family perspectives means we need to do the work to understand each other’s stresses and constraints and then come up with solutions jointly.

Session 2: Organizing 101. In this session we will explore how to connect with and mobilize members of the school community through a strategic one-on-one conversation.

Session 3: Communication. This session helps parents/guardians understand the frameworks that often guide schools as well as learn the tools needed to engage and build community in schools with empathy.

Session 4: Facilitating inclusive spaces. Parents/guardians will learn tools for facilitating meetings in inclusive and collaborative ways, as well as learn how to come up with a unified vision for a parent group.

Session 5: In this session we explore the existing structures for parent groups and provide information about avenues for advocacy at schools and at the district level.

Session 6: Understanding school budgets and funding. This session helps guardians know how to engage with school budgets and understand more about how schools work, so the constraints and opportunities are more clear.
