About the contest:
The Coolest Block in the Lower East Side, is a community-driven initiative to promote care and stewardship of street trees in the East Village, Lower East Side and Chinatown neighborhoods. The contest will officially kick off in February 2025, fostering local engagement, environmental awareness, and healthy competition.

This initiative is generously funded by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and the City Parks Foundation through their Treetops Grant, highlighting the collaborative effort to address urban environmental challenges.

The Coolest Block Contest invites residents, community groups, block associations, schools, and local organizations to compete for the title of the “Coolest Block in the Lower East Side.” Participants will focus on tree maintenance activities such as soil aeration, mulching, watering, and general cleanup while showcasing creativity and community spirit.
