This application is to apply to direct a specific full-length play or musical in 2027 at 4th Street Theater in Chesterton, IN (www.4thstreetncca.com). Please note - we are a non-equity, all-volunteer community theater, and as such directors are a volunteer position.
Applications are due December 31, 2025. Anyone wishing to apply must fill out this form. We will not accept applications in any other place.
A program committee member may contact you with any additional questions as part of our selection process. If we are considering a proposal, we may ask you to present your vision for the show in our space to the whole board.
Please remember when suggesting shows that our stage is 12 feet deep by 36 feet wide. We have minimal wing space and we do not have fly space. We do have a projector.
Preferred plays/musicals will be
- Shows must be full length - i.e. an expected run time of at least 90 minutes
- Directors agree to have open casting at auditions. No roles can be precast without prior board approval and clearly stated in the audition notice
- The director must be at least 21 years old
- Previous experience with directing is a requirement. If you do not have previous directing experience, please look at applying to direct a 10 Minute Play first. (Applications for that will be available in June)
- Preferably a show that has not been done in the last couple of years in the area. (or one that has already been announced to be done) Also a show that 4th Street hasn't done in at least 10 years.
- If it is a musical - smaller orchestras are preferred (6 or fewer musicians).
- For musicals - we do not use body microphones
We will consider the show content/themes, total estimated show costs, technical requirements (i.e. set, costume, lighting, sound, and any special effect needs), and having a variety of shows throughout the year (i.e. trying having both a comedy vs drama in a season and also newer plays vs classics as well as musical vs non-musical).
Show selection will be determined by the 4th Street Theater Program Committee and approved by the board.
