Introduction
The
Community Arts Grants is a fund that local individuals, groups and
organisations can apply for to deliver events for an autumn programme. They demonstrate Newham Council’s commitment
to supporting artists and organisations to develop high quality arts and cultural activities, that celebrate the diversity of local communities
and shine a light on creative talent, with activity unfolding across the
borough.
Individuals,
groups and organisations are invited to contribute to:
· Black History Month - Applications are now closed.
A month of celebration, creativity and
recognition, responding to the theme of “Reclaiming Narratives”. The aim is to
deliver an engaging, vibrant and accessible programme that celebrates the
culture, history and achievements that Black African and Caribbean people have
brought to Newham and the UK.
· Islamophobia Awareness Month
A month aimed at raising awareness of
Islamophobia in society, responding to the theme of “Seeds of Change”. The aim is to deliver programme that showcases
the positive contributions of Muslims in Newham and the UK.
Criteria
Black History
Month - Applications are now closed.
We are looking for applications for events that:
· Respond to the
theme of “Reclaiming Narratives”; recognising and correcting the narratives of
Black history and culture
· Recognise and
celebrate Black African and Caribbean communities, particularly Newham’s
diaspora
· Encourage open,
honest discussion and debate
· Motivate learning
· Address: Local and national achievers, Intergeneration, Music, dance and theatrical performances, Food and clothing
Islamophobia
Awareness Month
We are looking for applications for events
that:
· Respond to the
theme of “Seeds of Change”; how small actions can lead to big changes.
· Respond to the
idea that we can all plant seeds that help tackle Islamophobia
· Motivate learning
and encourage conversation and discussion
· Celebrate and
spotlight the work of Muslim communities in the UK, particularly in Newham
· Spotlight Muslim
histories and legacies around the world and in the UK
We will not fund
· Events that are
for private gain, or result in a profit.
· Events that have
no benefit for Newham residents.
· Events that
promote a particular political or religious view.
· Events placed in
a formal education setting as part of the core curriculum.
Application Assessment
Applications for Islamophobia Awareness Month will be assessed and scored by a
panel of Council officers and applicants will be informed of the panel’s
decision in the week beginning 26 August 2024.
Applications will
be assessed using the following weightings:
About your
project (questions 3, 5, 6 and 7) 40%
About your
experience (questions 12 and 13) 30%
Budget (questions
10 and 11) 20%
Connection to
Newham (question 14) 10%
Fee
Up to £2,000 is
available for individual events – a higher fee will be considered for a series
of events. The fee should cover all
elements of the event including design, planning, materials, expenses, on site
event management and evaluation.
There
will be no hire fee applicable to using Council venues (only libraries,
community centres and town halls), although fees for staffing and cleaning will
be applicable for town halls. You are
advised to check the fees when developing your budget.
You will be provided with a short evaluation questionnaire
for participants to complete.
Technical requirements
Please ensure you
carefully consider your technical (audio visual, ICT, etc) requirements in
relation to your chosen venue. Some technical equipment is available in Council
venues, but these may not be suitable for your event.
