Elected Officials in Support of AB-99: Pesticides on California state highways
AB 99 would require Caltrans  to adopt a statewide policy to only use integrated pest management (IPM) on state roads and highways in counties where IPM has been adopted to limit pesticide use as a last resort tool. AB99 has passed through both the Environmental Safety and Toxic Materials (ESTM) Committee and the Transportation Committee (thank you for your support!) Please include your name in this support letter that will be presented to the State Assembly Chair and Vice Chair when it makes it to the State Assembly Floor at a yet to be determined date.

Background:

AB99 would require the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) to adopt a statewide policy to only use integrated pest management (IPM) on state roads and highways in counties where IPM has been adopted. This would limit pesticide use to a "last resort" tool and greatly reduce chemical road management.  Numerous counties in California have passed ordinances banning the use of synthetic pesticides for routine, non-emergency land maintenance. Caltrans, however, is exempt from local rules and is allowed to spray pesticides with far less oversight and environmental precautions. In their 1992 Environmental Impact Report (EIR) Caltrans stated a goal to reduce pesticide use by 80% in 2012. Unfortunately, Caltrans' pesticide use has only increased (420,000 lbs of concentrated pesticide product were used on state highways in 2021). AB99 would require Caltrans to start working toward their own 1992 EIR goal.

AB99 was heard in the Environmental Safety and Toxic Materials Committee on March 28, 2023 (video of hearing available here). AB99 will be heard by the Transportation Committee on Monday April 24th. Please add your name to the brief letter below and your support will be submitted to the Transportation Committee. Alternately, please submit your letter of support through the state portal before April 17th 2023 :https://calegislation.lc.ca.gov/Advocates/
