Advent arrives on the fourth Sunday before Christmas, wearing a cloak of its own making. It sweeps its gaze around the room, taking in the air of anticipation and excited waiting. Childlike again, we sit straighter, sing louder, and our music from the 1500s to the 1990s braids together with an energy sparkling like tinsel.
Arvo Pärt’s Advent antiphons are the church bells ringing through the air, joined by the winding steps and tall walls of the church, brought to mind in Pierre de Manchicourt’s O Emmanuel. Elsewhere, Iacobus Gallus’s shifting harmonies proceed down a corridor with warmly lit candles, before the night blooms into unmistakable Christmas with Morten Lauridsen and John August Pamintuan.
We are gathered to remember the birth and love that saved the world once. A big love, one born from the biggest heart and lit by a hope that spills over like light and warms you to the bone. Some say there are many kinds of Christmas, and the same one never comes twice. This is ours.
