The Friedman Justice League, a student group at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy, is organizing a Tufts University-wide week of solidarity with families and individuals currently living on food stamps (officially called the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP). We’re asking you to join us on the SNAP Challenge starting Monday, December 2 and ending Monday, December 9 with a group potluck at the Friedman School.
What is SNAP?
SNAP is a governmental program that provides households facing short and long-term food insecurity with financial assistance to purchase food. Individual SNAP beneficiaries receive, at most, around $6.50 per day for all their meals. For many SNAP participants, this is all the money that they have available to spend on food or beverages. Recently, funding for SNAP has been cut by $5 billion dollars and Congress is discussing another $40 billion in cuts. These cuts will have very real impacts on food insecure households across the country: over 47 million low-income Americans participate in SNAP to help purchase food, and 76% of households enrolled include a child, and elderly person or a disabled person.
What is the SNAP Challenge?
The SNAP Challenge encourages participants to get a sense of what life is like for millions of low-income Americans facing hunger. By accepting the SNAP Challenge, you’ll commit to eating all of your meals from a limited food budget that equates to the highest SNAP benefit allotted – $2.16 per meal. We know this is not easy – participants will likely have to change their food consumption habits for the week, which will make obvious how difficult it is to avoid hunger, afford nutritious foods, and stay healthy with too few resources.
- Each person should spend a set amount for food and beverages during the Challenge week (December 2-9). That amount is $6.50 for all food and beverages (including coffee) each day, or $45.50 for the entire week, based on the highest allotment of SNAP benefits available.
- All food purchased and eaten during the Challenge week, including fast food and dining out, should be included in the total spending.
- During the Challenge, only eat food that you purchase for the project. Do not eat food that you already own (this does not include spices and condiments).
- Avoid accepting free food from friends, family, or at work, including at receptions, briefings, or other events where food is served.
- Keep track of receipts on food spending and take note of your experiences throughout the week.
- Invite others to join you, including co-workers, reporters, chefs, or other elected officials.
