Tobacco-Free Works Mission Statement

Endorse the mission statement below to join the Tobacco Free Works coalition

Mission statement

We are business leaders dedicated to reducing youth tobacco use in order to promote healthy communities where businesses succeed.

Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable death and disease in the United States. It claims 480,000 lives each year. It’s also bad for business–smoking costs the U.S. more than $600 billion every year due to lost productivity and healthcare spending.

Nearly 9 out of 10 adult smokers start smoking at or before they turn 18 years old. That's why efforts to limit the access and appeal of tobacco products to young people are key to ensuring we have a healthy workforce for the future with better productivity and lower healthcare costs for employers.

Most kids who use tobacco started with a flavored product, and young people often say that they use the products because they come in flavors they like. That’s especially clear with e-cigarettes, but it’s also the case for menthol cigarettes, and other tobacco products that come in flavors like peppermint mocha or cherry crush.

We support ending the sale of all flavored tobacco products. Doing so will help prevent young people from turning into life-long tobacco users. That’s a win for our communities and the businesses that are such an integral part of them.
