Exhibition Survey (Concrete)
This document is a template for thinking through the concrete steps to a successful art exhibition. There are a lot of questions. Not all need to be answered. Most questions are meant as guides to help uncover or identify missing pieces.

Don't be afraid of lists or incomplete ideas. If you're having trouble with a question, enter "I don't know..." or "I'm confused about..." then circle back later. The puzzle pieces don't dump out of the box completed. This survey helps to start flipping pieces over and finding the edges.

After submitting, a copy of your responses will be emailed to the address you provided.

Space

Some exhibitions begin with a space, and choose the pieces to fit. Others begin with the pieces, and find a space to accommodate. The space is often the element which has the greatest effect on the exhibition, but over which exhibitors have least control. The prestige of the venue does not guarantee financially or relationally successful shows. On the other hand, the ambiance of more casual venues may detract from the impact of the exhibition. Broadly, the space should be representative of the community the artist wants to be connected with.
Size: How many pieces (of what media) will physically fit? Does the space comfortably accommodate the pieces and expected audience (will attendance need limiting on full opening night?) Is parking sufficient for the expected audience?
Time: What dates are available? By when will the exhibition be ready? How long will the pieces be exhibited? Will pieces need to be monitored? What time can be provided outside of the exhibition time to prepare the space?
Floor Plan: Will the space/gallery provide a floor plan? If not, should one be made for planning purposes? Will the venue have concurrent exhibitions?
Walls: Does the wall color support the theme/exhibition? If not, can they be painted/is it practical? Does the space have restrictions/requirements for fasteners or installations? Will the venue have other pieces displayed during the exhibition?
Lighting: Is the space lit to display art? Can additional lighting be supplied?
Support Staff: Will the artist build the exhibition independently, the venue install and arrange the pieces, or will volunteers, curators, or exhibition designers be required? What staff will the space provide?
Refreshments: Does the venue permit or provide refreshments? Will food/drink be provided for guests (on opening night, special events or otherwise?)
Transportation: How will the artwork be transported? Do certain pieces require assembly and disassembly?
Promotion: Will the venue help with promotion? Do they have a mailing list, publication or newsletter to use or submit content to? By what channel’s will the artists’ own network be engaged?
