Equity Forward Workshop: Medical-Legal Partnership: Using Law & Policy to Advance Health Equity & Expand Interprofessional Learning
Despite awareness that social drivers of health (SDOH) negatively impact patients and contribute to health disparities, gaps in treating SDOH persist. Medical-Legal Partnership (MLP) is an evidence-based care delivery model that formally integrates lawyers into health care teams to help identify and address the subset of SDOH that require legal advocacy to overcome. As an academic MLP, the Health Justice Alliance provides service, education, and research opportunities where health and legal care providers work together to treat patients’ housing, employment, insurance, public benefits, and other SDOH needs.
At the end of the workshop participants will be able to...
- Identify at least 2-3 civil legal needs that negatively impact patient health and well-being and may benefit from MLP
- Describe 1-2 specific examples of how health care providers can work together with lawyers in an MLP to benefit patient and communities
- Explain how MLPs operate within health care settings, how they expand provider capacity to manage their patients’ SDOH, and discuss whether they may help reduce provider stress and burnout
