Business Sign-On Letter in Support of Disposable Food Ware Ordinance
To Mayor-Elect Blangiardi, the Honolulu City Council, and the Department of Environmental Services,
We, the undersigned businesses of Oʻahu, write in support of Ordinance 19-30, previously known as Bill 40. This Disposable Food Ware Ordinance is an important initiative to phase out single-use plastics. We understand the reasons behind the 90-day education period, and we ask that this be the final step to implementing this law.
As representatives of our local business community, we stand by this ordinance as both an inspiring and feasible solution to plastic pollution and overconsumption of single-use products. This ordinance received an outpouring of support from a wide coalition of community members, non-profit organizations, businesses, and local youth, and it was passed with a notable margin of 7 to 2 by the Honolulu City Council . Since then, businesses like ours have diligently prepared for the January 1 effective date.
We look forward to supporting the incoming administration on the rollout of this ordinance following the 90 day education period. This ordinance moves forward the City's and the State’s sustainability goals. It is inarguable that single-use plastics inundate our island and lead to unnecessary waste. We must do what we can to protect our environment and our community, with Ordinance 19-30 as one of many important actions we can take.
Mahalo nui loa for your consideration.
