YaLa Academy Citizen Journalism Program Application - Spring 2020

It's time to make your voice heard! Today's internet allows the voices of civil societies to be heard globally - a power once reserved for only the largest media and news corporations -
we must make the best of this opportunity and use it to build bridges for a better, more peaceful future!

The YaLa Academy's Aileen Getty School of Citizen Journalism invites you to undergo a 3-month online training program (starting March 2020) featuring journalists and new media experts from the Associated Press, Al Jazeera, CNN, National Geographic & more! The program will be held in English and participants must come from, or live in, Israel, Palestine or another country in the Middle East or North Africa, and be between the ages of 17 and 36.

The program will train you to become a "citizen journalist" experienced in expressing yourself, telling your stories, writing articles, taking photos, making videos, making a podcast, using new & social media tools and engaging in cross-border dialogue.

During the 3-month program, you will participate in online lectures by leading experts and journalists, take part in webinar sessions discussing the video lectures (once a week), and will be asked to submit several short assignments as well as one final assignment. In addition, you will be invited to join a private Facebook working group where we can interact as a group and discuss our assignments. You will be assigned a Coordinator who will help you go through the training and give you feedback on your assignments. Throughout the program, you will learn how to create written, audio and visual content about the issues important to you - such as peace, gender, identity, culture, social justice, environment, etc.

The best pieces created during the program will be published on YaLa Press (www.yala-press.com).

So, what are you waiting for - it's time to share stories with young people from across the region and join a network of activists using social media to promote understanding, peace and important social causes - become a YaLa Citizen Journalist!
