Dance in school is very different than dance in a private studio or the dance shows that you see on T.V. In this class you will focus on learning how to create dance. You will learn some new dance movements, work on proper dance technique, and try different dance styles, but our main focus will be on choreography.
We will spend be concentrating on learning how to properly use our bodies in ways that avoid injury, improvising, learning and perfecting dance skills, and learning basic choreographic skills. We will also begin our journey toward creating a finished product. The students will collaborate with me to create a dance piece just for their track. The students will also work together with the other track to create a student choreographed piece. Our finished products will include research of a topic, student choreography, some teacher choreography, and some type of integration of technology. Please make sure you mark your calendars with the date, November 28th. This is the Winter Dance Concert. It will begin at 6pm. Alice in Wonderland Spring Concert will be May 15th at 6pm. These performances are MANDATORY. Students who do not attend will have an alternate assignment (a research paper) to make up the grade. Students are only required to attend the concert for the semester that they are enrolled in dance.
Homebase/Power Schools and the Dance Website are wonderful tools for communication about grades and assignments. Please make it a habit to check these sites at least once a week to stay updated on the latest assignments, announcements, etc. You can find a link to my website on the Holly Grove Middle website as well as at the bottom of my email signature.(http://hollygrovedance.weebly.com)
I ask that all students and parents read and become thoroughly familiar with the contents of this handbook in order to avoid any misunderstandings as we progress through the semester. This handbook contains policies and procedures that will be in effect for the 2017-2018 school year. Supplies are due on the 6th day of the semester. Please let me know if you need help in getting the supplies for your child. It is extremely important that students have their supplies on time and each and every day. This will help ensure that your child has a successful semester.
Parents, feel free to contact me anytime (email@example.com) with questions that you may have. I look forward to an exciting and prosperous semester.
Sincerely,Meghan Retseck, Dance Director
