First, though, here’s some information about the project.
The Caserma Guglielmo Pepe was built between 1591 and 1595 on the Lido, in the Venetian Lagoon, to accommodate soldiers defending the Serenissima. Its military functions ended in1999 and it has been disused ever since.
In 2016, the Biennale Urbana agency started to put the building to use over short periods through its « Urban Intervention Camp » project which saw cultural activities and workshops organised with partners from the lagoon and elsewhere.

This year, thanks to a temporary occupation permit granted by the Agenzia del Demanio, Biennale Urbana has invited Lieux Infinis to design and build the setting for a unique cultural experience, and to organise cross-disciplinary residencies.

Functioning as the practical and local counterpoint to the experimentations on display at the Lieux Infinis exhibition in the French pavilion, Esperanza Pepe is a dual research-action project driven by a collective spirit.

This collaboration, involving French and Italian participants, has enabled the courtyard of this former barracks to be opened up for local and international initiatives.
