Submission Form  EYPIC 2026

Dear Author(s),

European Guanxi invites submissions for the third volume of the European Youth Perspectives on International Relations of China Journal (EYPIC): EU-China 3.0: Derisking, Opportunities, and Lessons from China’s Rise.

Following an initial ‘Europe–China 1.0’ phase defined by optimism about economic complementarity and strategic partnership, and a subsequent ‘Europe–China 2.0’ phase marked by growing perceptions of China as a partner, competitor, and systemic rival, EU–China relations are entering a ‘3.0’ moment, characterized by a renewed emphasis on economic security and industrial competitiveness, a recalibration of European identity, and growing ideological asymmetries.

Amid a rapidly shifting global order, marked by great power competition and substantial shocks to the global trading system, SinoEuropean relations have reached a critical juncture. This year’s volume of EYPIC seeks to explore how Europe has interpreted, responded to, and learned from China’s rise — politically, ideologically, and strategically. The guiding question for this volume is: How do ideological differences between Europe and China shape their approaches to strategic competition and economic interdependence in a turbulent world?

Submissions should be forward-thinking, while drawing on points of convergence and divergence in European and Chinese political and ideological thought, and the implications for future trajectories in EU–China relations.

Potential topics and research questions may include the following:

Ideological Narratives

  • Push to revitalise the EU: What can Europe learn from China and vice versa, and what values and institutional designs should Europe preserve? What do Europe and China seek from each other?
  • How do Europe and China’s worldviews diverge? In which aspects do they align?
  • How have differences and similarities in political thought and ideology shaped the EU and China’s approach to diplomacy? How does that impact the future outlook of Sino-European relations?
  • European and Chinese perspectives on Global Governance

Economics and Industrial Policy:

  • Chinese new quality productive forces (NQPF) vs. European reindustrialization: synergies and points of contention
  • Lessons for Europe from China's Joint Venture Strategy
  • Shared lessons from Europe and China’s development philosophies
  • Chinese and European strengths and weaknesses in industrial development and regulation

Geoeconomic Competition

  • European dependence on Chinese manufacturing, critical minerals, the impact of overcapacity
  • EU-China economic relations in face of U.S. tariffs: momentum for furthering cooperation?
  • The impact of the decline of the World Trade Organization and the global trading system within the context of EU-China relations

Technology and Innovation

  • European and Chinese technological sovereignty and dominance: cooperation and contention in the era of semiconductors, quantum computing, and the AI revolution
  • European vs. Chinese innovation ecosystems
