NYU’s adjunct faculty union, ACT-UAW 7902, is renegotiating its contract with NYU and fighting for a just wage increase and better benefits. Adjunct faculty are in a precarious position — adjuncts are generally only hired for one semester at a time, and lack guarantees that they will be re-hired for the next semester. This leads to incredible uncertainty: adjuncts need to plan their lives while never knowing for sure if they’ll still have a job in a year’s time. Adjunct faculty are also severely underpaid for their work, often earning salaries far below the cost of living in NYC.
Despite the difficulties of adjusting to remote instruction during the pandemic, NYU adjunct faculty, unlike faculty members at other institutions, received no bonus compensation for their extra work.
Adjunct faculty are demanding better pay, expanded access to healthcare, greater job security, and compensation for their work outside the classroom which is compounded by remote teaching. Adjunct faculty teach over 10,000 classes every academic year at NYU, and they’ve taken on the burden of carrying NYU through the pandemic for the last two years.
Adjunct working conditions become the students' learning conditions. These faculty deserve respect and recognition for everything they do for the NYU community, and this pledge is a commitment of your support for them and their demands.
