IfSpace FIRST LEGO League Application
We are excited that you're considering joining one of our LEGO teams! Please complete the information below to the best of your ability. No LEGO or robotics experience is required to join a team, but knowing more about your student's background helps us to understand their interests and personality to ensure the best possible team fit. FLL team members need to bring their enthusiasm, positivity, creative spirit and a willingness to work hard and problem solve to every meeting!

The second half of this application is directed to your student, so please make sure you have them handy before you start to submit your application!

FIRST LEGO League is a big time commitment.
Members should expect to participate for one to two hours per week for 16 weeks during class time. There will be at least two, but no more than 5, weekend tournaments, and potentially 2-4 outside-of-class practices (particularly if the teams advance to the next rounds of competition). While we make every effort to secure spots in Brevard tournaments, the Space Coast League inexplicably includes Seminole County, and it is sometimes necessary for us to travel to Orlando on tournament days. Tournaments typically start around 8:30 AM and continue until 3:30 PM or later with a short break for lunch.

FIRST LEGO League is a team activity.
Teamwork is at the heart of FIRST LEGO League. Team members rely on one another for the robot game, project presentation, and particularly the Core Values portions of the competition. If your student misses a tournament or quits the team halfway through the year, they will be causing a significant disruption to the team and jeopardizing the success the team has worked for all season.

FIRST LEGO League is more than just robots.
FIRST LEGO League is a combination of the robot game, the science project research, preparation and presentation, and the Core Values team challenge. We will necessarily spend lots of time on robots and programming at IfSpace, but your student will also have outside-of-class responsibilities pertaining to the science project and presentation. Not every class period at IfSpace will be spent on robots! The students will need to rehearse their presentations as a group, and practice core values challenges together. Make no mistake, this is ALL STEM education! All of these skills - robotics, coding, game strategy, mechanism design, research, presentation, public speaking, commitment, and teamwork - are important for students considering STEM careers.

FIRST LEGO League runs best with a group of dedicated volunteers.
IfSpace happily hosts up to four FIRST LEGO League teams each season! On any given tournament Saturday, the IfSpace contingent comprises 50 or 60 parents, siblings, coaches, and team members. That is a lot of people to manage! In order to make sure our seasons run smoothly, we will not officially form teams (that is, register them with FIRST) until parents have filled the following roles for each competitive team. Each of these roles will take about 3-4 hours per month of time, though that may increase during tournament season. Each team needs a Team Mom/Dad to manage communication, plan snacks, and corral paperwork, a Project Mentor to provide guidance to teams as they work on their project solution and help with their project board and presentation, and a Core Values Champion to identify outreach opportunities, coordinate tournament day 'swag', and practice core values challenges with the kids.

The three things I would most like to do for our team are:
Have you ever made any inventions? Tell us about them! (It's okay if you haven't invented anything so far!)
In a short essay, please tell us why you'd like to join our team. Think about how you'd contribute to teamwork, and why you think FIRST LEGO league would be a lot of fun!
That's the end! Thank you for applying to join one of our teams!
We'll announce everyone's team assignments by the first week in July! Please feel free to contact us in the meantime if you have any questions or concerns.
