Wizarding Weekend Pumpkin Carving Contest & Silent Auction Rules

The Wizarding Weekend Pumpkin Carving Contest kicks off the weekend festivities with a creative pumpkin sculpting contest and silent auction. Carvers use pumpkins and/or gourds to create a carved masterpiece with a theme of magic, science or fantasy. Artists, designers, and students are encouraged to participate.

Carvings will be made on site of the Wizarding Weekend festival on Friday October 26, 2018 from 3:30pm-5:30pm. Attendees will be able to view the live carving and bid in the silent auction to win their favorite carving. When carving, judging and silent auction are complete, unsold carvings will be on display in local stores on Saturday and Sunday October 27 and 28, 2018.

Proceeds from the silent auction benefit the Wizarding Weekend festival and its non-profit partners.
Please read the rules carefully before submitting your entry via the entry form.
Entries not complying with the competition rules will be disqualified.

Official Rules
1. Carvers can carve solo or be a team of up to four people but will be judged equally.
2. Entries must be original concepts and not infringe on intellectual property including names and film or television imagery or replicas.
3. Entries must be themed to magic, science and/or fantasy.
4. Carvers can be any age but carvers under 18 must have at least one adult on their team for every under 18 team member for safety reasons.
5. Carving teams can be private citizens or represent a business or non-profit. Any level of carver ability may participate.
6. One entry per carver or carving team.
7. Entries may incorporate multiple pumpkins, gourds, and similar materials as accessories or in support of the carving.
8. There has to be at least 1 pumpkin in the entry.
9. Carvers are responsible to provide their own pumpkins, gourds, decorating accessories and carving tools. Power tools are permitted but must have their own power source (no electricity provided).
10. Pumpkins/gourds should be gutted before carving begins to save time and reduce mess on-site.
11. Other than planning, no other prep work may be done on your pumpkin (drawing, scoring, pre-cutting parts, etc.).
12. Stencils and tracing materials are permitted if the stencils are created by the carvers.
13. Painting is permitted but carving is required for all entries.
14. All participants must follow safe carving practices.
15. Decorating accessories are allowed but should not comprise the majority of your design and CANNOT include fireworks, open flame, electric powered or propane powered special effects.
16. Completed entries must be no larger than 4’ wide x 4’ deep x 4’ tall. Entries will need to be able to be moved from your carving table to either the winning bidder’s car or to a local storefront. If the carving is large, it will need to be structurally sound enough—or able to be separated to be moved. The entry with the highest auction bid receives a bonus of judging points.
17. All final carvings must be finished and ready for judging at 5:30pm 10/26/18. Silent auction bidding ends at 6:00pm.
18. Entries must be appropriate for public display - no profanity, nudity or political statements.

Determination of Winners
1. All entries will be judged by a carefully selected team of judges.
2. Entries are judged on three criteria: Use of Theme, Creativity, Technical.
3. Each entry will receive a score in the range of 1-5 (1 being the worst, 5 being the best, half points given)
4. 2.5 Bonus points will be added to the entry with the highest auction bid and 2.5 bonus points for the People’s Choice Entry.
5. Scores will determine third, second, and first place carvings. In the case of a tie, a tiebreaker judge will review the tied carvings and make a final decision
6. The judge’s decision is final.

Winning Entries
First place prize: $300 cash prize
Second place prize: $200 cash prize
Third place prize: $100 cash prize

All prizes and silent auction winners will be announced October 26, 2018 6:00pm. Additional announcements with photos will be made on WizardingWeekend.com, and through Wizarding Weekend social media channels (Facebook, Instagram and Twitter) later on October 26, 2018.

Entries that have been sold through the silent auction will be taken at the conclusion of the judging. Entries that have not been sold through the auction will be placed in local businesses for display through the weekend. Carvers can retrieve their carvings if they wish on Sunday October 28 after 4pm.

Winning carvers will receive their prizes at the judging ceremony and must be present to win.

By entering you are forfeiting your creation to the cause. Unless you purchase your own pumpkin through the silent auction, you will not be taking your creation home, unless no one buys your pumpkin, in which case you are responsible for removing it from the premises.
