We hope you are ready to have an amazing weekend making music, meeting new people and performing at your very own live gig! Please read the important information below before continuing onto our application.
ABOUT WOMEN ROCK LONDON
‘Women Rock London’ (WRL) is an intensive three and a half day camp running from Friday 25th - Monday 28th May at Halley House School in Dalston. It provides you with the opportunity to learn the basics of an instrument (or some new skills on one you already play), play in a band and write and perform a song. No musical experience is needed AT ALL - but you must be over 18 to attend.
The camp exists to provide opportunities for women* to overcome barriers to music-making and performance, and to give participants' confidence and self-esteem a boost. The majority of tutors, band coaches and other people working at the camp are volunteers who are passionate about supporting other women to get involved with music-creation.
*WRL is a trans-inclusive space; women, trans and gender nonconforming folks who feel they would get something out of the weekend are all very welcome to attend.
WHAT HAPPENS AT CAMP
Over the course of the weekend you will:
- form a band with other participants (with our help)- learn and practice an instrument (you will be allocated an instrument based on your preferences)- take part in workshops that will help you develop your skills, work on your song-writing and fine-tune your performance- watch live bands at our lunchtime 'mini gigs' - perform the song you have written with your band on stage at a live gig venue.
EVERYONE at the camp will learn the basics of an instrument - or new skills on one they already play - in group instrument tuition with two tutors. The instruments available to choose from are: electric guitar, electric bass, synth and acoustic drums. At this year's camp, vocals are not being offered as a separate option; instead everyone will have the opportunity to work on and perform vocals if they want.
The final gig will take place at The Victoria in Dalston on the 28th May at 6pm. This is where all the bands will perform their newly-written songs. This is a public gig and you can invite your friends and family to come along to this awesome celebration of what the bands have achieved over the weekend.
CAMP FEE (FREE PLACES)
The majority of participants at this year’s Women Rock London will be encouraged to pay what they can afford on a sliding scale, but thanks to funding from the Arts Council we also have five completely FREE places for women, trans and gender non-conforming folks from low-income households.
Free places are being provided with the aim of opening up access to our events to people who would otherwise not be able to afford to take part. We will prioritise free places for people living in the borough of Hackney, where we are based, but applicants from other areas are also encouraged to apply.
Our free places will be allocated based on self-selection; we do not ask for any sort of financial paperwork. However, the funds for financial assistance are limited, so please only ask for what you really need, to ensure there is enough for all who need it.
'Low-income' is something we deliberately don't define - it is up to you to decide whether you think it applies to you. We would ask you to consider your own income, that of your household if relevant, and general life circumstances, when applying for a free place. For example, you may be someone who is unemployed or earning less than the London Living Wage, or you might be eligible for benefits, or you may earn more than the London Living Wage but have a lot of financial responsibilities such as caring for older relatives or children.
WHO CAN APPLY?
Do you want to make music? Are you over 18?
We are looking for women, trans and gender nonconforming folk aged 18 or over who want to make music and be part of a band in a supportive and like-minded community of excellent women. You don’t need ANY musical experience at all - you may have never touched an instrument before. You don't need to like rock music - 'Girls Rock' is more about our attitude than a specific genre. None of this matters. If you want to get involved we want to hear from you!
There is also no age limit, please feel free to sign up whatever your age - is never too late to start!
We also want to make sure that our camps reflect the communities we live and work in, and that women from all backgrounds who want to come to our camps feel welcome. To help us do this - among other things - we are reserving a quarter of our places for women of colour, disabled women and gender non-conforming people. We welcome applications from any individuals over the age of 18, especially if you identify with any of the groups we have mentioned above.
Free places will be prioritised to residents of Hackney.
HOW MANY PEOPLE WILL THERE BE AT CAMP?
There will be 25 participants at our camp, from which five bands will be formed. We think the camp will fill up quickly so please make sure to get your application in early so as not to be disappointed. Those who are not accepted this time round will be placed on a waiting list.
Women Rock London will be taking at Halley House School, 52-58 Arcola Street, London, E8 2DJ.
