Wills for Heroes is a pro bono legal clinic program sponsored by the North Carolina Bar Foundation in which volunteer attorneys draft simple wills, health care power of attorney, and financial power of attorney documents for first responders and their families, free of charge. Through this popular pro bono program, members of our legal profession serve first responders who risk their lives to serve the people of North Carolina every day.
Wills for Heroes clinics are conducted in a part virtual/part in-person format designed to expand the program's services statewide and reduce personal contact. Wills for Heroes volunteers use a document production app accessible via a website to draft basic wills and power of attorney documents for first responders. The app-based platform facilitates attorney-client meetings in a virtual setting so that attorneys from anywhere in the state can serve first responders anywhere in the state. Following the virtual client meetings for document production - which are open to volunteer attorneys with any practice background (training is provided) - estate planning attorney and notary volunteers assist with in-person client document review and execution clinics.
