Join us on February 11th at 6:30 PM in the Great Hall on UNC's campus as we commemorate the 10th anniversary of the tragic murders of Deah Barakat, Yusor Abu-Salha, and Razan Abu-Salha with an evening of remembrance, reflection, and community learning.
This special event, hosted by the UNC Muslim Students Association (MSA) with support from co-sponsors, will feature the first campus screening of 36 Seconds: Portrait of a Hate Crime, an award-winning documentary by filmmaker Tarek Elbaba. The film explores the profound impact of this heinous crime on the Chapel Hill community and beyond, offering a moving exploration of hate, loss, and resilience.
Following the screening, a panel discussion will foster dialogue and understanding. Panelists will include Tarek Elbaba, Dr. Suzanne Barakat—sister of Deah Barakat and a UNC alum—alongside others closely connected to the tragedy. Together, we will reflect on the senseless divisions that harm our society and honor the enduring legacy of service, positivity, and unity embodied by Deah, Yusor, and Razan.
This event is open to all and qualifies as a CLE event for students. We invite you to stand with us in remembering these beautiful souls, learning from this tragedy, and committing to a brighter, more inclusive future.
