New York - Clear Direction Fellow Application 2024-2025
Clear Direction Mentoring (CDM) is a FREE mentorship program dedicated to increasing diversity and inclusion in Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, and Medicine (STEMM) fields by providing 1-on-1, group, and peer mentorship support to outstanding high school students from underrepresented backgrounds in STEMM. This can include students from racial/ethnic minority backgrounds, students with disabilities, and/or students from disadvantaged socioeconomic backgrounds (see our website for more details: https://cleardirectionmentoring.org

We are now celebrating our 11th year as an organization and are so thrilled to invite you to join this historic cohort!

What this program will provide to you:

- A personalized mentor who is a STEMM professional at a prestigious NYC research institution
- A network of mentors excited to help you with your STEMM journey 
- Monthly immersive STEMM experiences (for examples, see below) 
- Access to a paid internship program once you graduate high school 
- A community of like-minded and diverse peers to support you

What are the immersive STEMM experiences? 
First of all, they're awesome! Previously these have included things like career panels with experts, tours of scientific laboratories, viewing open heart surgeries, trips to virtual reality centers, museums, Google, Spotify, and beyond! 

What are some characteristics that often describe Clear Direction fellows?

- New York City High School Sophomores, Juniors, or Seniors 
- Highly motivated to pursue education in Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, or Medicine (STEMM)
- Underrepresented minority student in STEMM (see our website for more details, but this includes racial and ethnic minorities, students from a disadvantaged background, and students with disabilities  https://www.cleardirectionmentoring.com/what-we-do
- Curious, creative, articulate, passionate, and ambitious
- Respectful, open to learning, a good listener
- Hungry for experiences that can catapult them to the next level
- Dedicated to showing up, being on time, and focused on the task at hand

-      There is NO GPA Requirement and no cost for this program

What do we expect from you?
We expect you to have weekly communication with your mentor, to attend monthly academies with other incredible peers, and engage in other career development workshops focused on: college readiness, scholarships, and finding paid internships to advance your career. This is the opportunity of a lifetime to join a community of like-minded, supportive people that will help you launch your educational journey and career in STEMM!

Clear Direction Year-Long Perspective:
  • Applications are due Thursday, August 1st at Midnight

  • Notified of Acceptance to Program by Thursday, September 15th

  • Fellow Orientation - Saturday, September 24th from 11 AM - 12: 30 PM via zoom

  • ATTENDANCE IS REQUIRED FOR ORIENTATION AND ALL GROUP EVENTS

  • Group Events and Academies - 1st Saturday of the Month 11 AM - 2 PM

  • All events will be in person at various STEMM work environments

    • Inaugural Event - October 5th 

    • November Academy - November 2nd 

    • December Academy - December 7th 

    • January Fun Event - Hangout in-person with your mentor (or a group)! 

    • February Fun Event - February 1st 

    • March Academy - March 1st 

    • April Academy - April 5th 

    • End of the Year Banquet -  May 3rd 

Transportation: 

Our events are held at various locations throughout NYC and you will be expected to attend in-person once a month. We will provide you with metrocards to attend our events (and will give these all out at the Inaugural Event). During fellow onboarding, we will teach you to use google maps to navigate your journey to every academy in advance. We will also always provide the contact information of the event leader, and detailed information on how to get to the location. 

Communication Expectations

You must attend the onboarding event on August 24th to be accepted into the program. You will be paired with a 1-on-1 mentor. You will be expected to communicate with your mentor on a weekly basis. They are your most valuable resource in gaining information, exposure, and care to help you excel and propel your career further. 

You are also required to attend all of our monthly Academies. For absences, you must email ClearDirectionMentoring@gmail.com AND your mentor before the event to have an excused absence. After 2 excused or 1 unexcused absence, you will be contacted with a warning and asked to work with your mentor on a plan to attend the remaining academiesThree excused or two unexcused absences are grounds for further consultation and/or disciplinary action including removal from the program.
