Statement of Solidarity to Support Divestment 2017
We are calling for the University of Michigan to divest from any and all companies that presently, or in the future, profit off of the human rights violations committed by Israel and that aid in the occupation and apartheid system that Israel maintains against the Palestinians. Currently, the university is invested in Boeing, HP, United Technologies, G4S,  General Electric, Lockheed Martin, Raytheon Co,  Exxon Mobil, BAE Systems, Dexia, and Toyota. The following outlines just some examples of the crimes in which the University of Michigan is currently investing in:

BOEING  “has been a major supplier of the F-15 Eagle and the AH-64 Apache attack helicopters to Israel. These aircrafts have been used to attack Palestinians in the Occupied Territories, resulting in many civilian casualties. Boeing makes missile systems, F-15 software, Apache Helicopters, and Joint Direct Attack Munitions (JDAM), a guided air-to-surface weapon”

HP "In 2007, the Israel Prison Service contracted Hewlett-Packard Company to develop, implement, and maintain a new information system, called Kidma, to include all its prisoner records system, prison management system, the prisons’ human resources system, and their intelligence system. The Israeli Prison Service is in charge of all incarcerated persons in Israel/Palestine. As of April 2017, this includes some 6,400, among whom about 500 are in in administrative detention and 300 are children. Most Palestinian prisoners are transferred from the occupied Palestinian territories to prisons located within Israel, in violation of the Fourth Geneva Convention (Article 76). Furthermore, the Israel Prison Service separates Palestinian prisoners from Israeli prisoners, and subject them to torture and other discriminatory treatment.

G4S “provides security systems for prisons for Palestinian political prisoners in Israel and in the West Bank”  in which Palestinian prisoners are regularly tortured, as documented by various human rights groups "

UNITED TECHNOLOGIES “produces Blackhawk helicopters which are used by the Israeli military to attack Palestinian cities, refugee camps and villages. Many civilians have been killed in these attacks”.

GENERAL ELECTRIC "engines are used in Israel’s primary air and naval military platforms. Israel has used Apache helicopters in ongoing attacks against civilians in Lebanon, the West Bank, and Gaza, labeled by the international human rights community as human rights violations and at times war crimes."

LOCKHEED MARTIN "Lockheed Martin Corporation is a U.S. defense and aerospace company headquartered in Bethesda, MD. It was listed as the No. 1 arms manufacturer in the world in 2012. According to the UN’s Fact-Finding Mission on the Gaza Conflict, Hellfire missiles fired from Apache helicopters targeted civilians during Operation Cast Lead in Gaza in 2008-9. These attacks were ruled violations of international human rights and humanitarian law and possible war crimes and crimes against humanity. 1394 Palestinian men and women were killed in the Cast Lead attacks, of them 345 minors."

As our University remains invested in these companies, we as students are complicit in the perpetuation of these human rights violations. Do not let the University of Michigan invest in oppression and apartheid.

Our resolution is focusing on these companies: Boeing, HP, United Technologies
