CLASS/THE FORM: Contact improvisation is a dance form where points of physical contact provide the focus for movement improvisation and exploration, often practiced in pairs but also in various-sized groups. Dancing can range from slow and meditative to acrobatic and vigorous. Guided exercises and explorations will help class participants develop or improve skills of deep listening, falling, rolling, counterbalance, lifting using minimal effort, how to make ourselves light when being lifted, comfort with solo, duet, trio, and group movement, tuning into the speed and potential of our reflexes, how to both avoid causing boundary violations and practice re-directing or rejecting dances, and responsiveness to our partners and surroundings. This class is suited for beginners, intermediate, and advanced dancers. Contact Improvisation was initiated in 1972 by Steve Paxton, integrating his background as a modern dancer, his studies in the martial art form Aikido, and as a conceptual and performance artist.
TEACHER: Sara Zolbrod, with guest teachers Alito Alessi, Karen Nelson, and Ethan Dunn also rotating in. Sara Zolbrod has been practicing and studying contact improvisation for over twenty years. She is a member of the 8-person Eugene Contact Improvisation Collective that hosts the weekly Friday jams. She co-produces the annual Breitenbush Hot Springs spring contact improvisation jam. In her free time, there is nothing she would rather do than study more approaches to contact improvisation and other related dance and expression forms. She has studied with Steve Paxton (initiator of contact improvisation), Martin Keogh, Nancy Stark Smith, Ray Chung, Andrew Harwood, and many other contact improvisation teachers.
*($10-$20 sliding scale drop-in per class also okay, but we suggest doing the whole series for continuity and deepening.)
*The Saturday, Nov. 10th workshop will have a surcharge of $5 extra, as the guest teacher—Karen Nelson—is traveling to Eugene from the Seattle area. This surcharge will be collected at the studio on November 10th. Inquire about details of Karen's additional afternoon contact improvisation workshop, 2:00 - 4:30pm, Saturday Nov. 10th at the Hilyard Community Center.
