The Essentials Fund
Thank you for your interest in The Essentials Fund! Now in its second year, The Essentials Fund is administered through the Waterloo Region Community Foundation. For more information, please visit https://www.wrcf.ca/essentialsfund. Please find information below about the application process.

The Fund’s values guide our fundraising campaign and granting process. These values include:
  • Gratitude: We are thankful for Waterloo Region’s non-profit sector’s focus and work with the most vulnerable people in our community. We are thankful for the support, trust, and generosity of our donors.
  • Trust: We will support charities through an unrestricted grant to provide the essentials needed by their clients for long term health.
  • Teamwork: We recognize that we achieve more when we work in partnership and collaborate with our community.
  • Transparent and Equitable: We are transparent and equitable in our approach to fundraising and granting. We will provide grants to organizations that do not discriminate and/or infringe upon the human rights of all people.
Application Process:
  • The following sectors/organizations are excluded from applying - municipalities, universities/colleges, schools, hospitals, religious institutions, and/or organizations that undermine the human rights of others.
  • Applicants must be a registered charity or have a sponsoring organization who is a qualified donee – please see www.wrcf.ca/fiscal-partner for more information. The Fund will provide an unrestricted grant designed to be used by the successful applicant to provide essential items to support their clients’ long-term health and wellbeing.
  • The application deadline is Friday, June 9, 2023 at 5pm.
  • Our goal is to provide a response to all applications no later than July, 2023.

If you are not a registered charity, do you have an agreement with a qualified donee (https://www.wrcf.ca/fiscal-partner) to have funds flow to you? Our fund is held at Waterloo Region Community Foundation (WRCF). Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) permits WRCF to make grants and distributions only to organizations that are “qualified donees”, which includes registered Canadian charities. We are happy to have a conversation with you about this if needed.

If you are a grant recipient, we will contact you in October for your feedback to provide an update to fund donors and the community at large through social media. Do you agree to provide a quote, one paragraph summary, or have a conversation with us about how you used the grant and the impact it had on your clients and work in the community? *
