From Voir Dire to Sentencing: Constructing the Capital Defense Narrative
Please join us April 17, 2026 for a one-day in-person training in the Eidman Courtroom at University of Texas School of Law, 727 East Dean Keeton Street, Austin, Texas 78705. Agenda can be found here.

This training was made possible by the Judith Filler Foundation.

Description:

This Continuing Legal Education (CLE) program provides capital defense practitioners with practical strategies for building and presenting a cohesive defense narrative throughout all stages of a capital case—from discovery and pretrial motions to jury selection and sentencing advocacy. Through plenary sessions, breakout training, and panel discussions, experienced attorneys, mitigation specialists, and media professionals will explore collaborative approaches to investigation, mitigation development, litigation strategy, and public engagement in high-stakes cases.

Participants will learn how to analyze discovery materials to uncover mitigation themes, develop integrated case narratives, utilize innovative motion practice to strengthen defense positions, and conduct effective jury selection in capital trials. The program will also address the strategic role of media engagement in shaping public understanding while protecting client interests.

Designed for criminal defense attorneys, mitigation specialists, investigators, and other members of the capital defense team, this CLE emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration and practical tools that can be implemented immediately in capital litigation.
