YVR 2017 Slam Registration
The poetry slam is a competition invented in the 1980s by a Chicago construction worker named Marc Smith [“So what!”] in which performed poetry is judged by random members of the audience. The poetry slam was a way of taking poetry away from the “Ivory Tower” of academia and give it back to the people. However, even though the slam is a competition, which brings communities together, the point in the poetry not the score.

In partnership with Mesa Arts Center, Phonetic Spit will produced it's 5th Annual Young Voices Rise Youth Poetry Festival and All-City Youth Poetry Slam Championship. This festival brings together High School and Middle school students from all across the greater Phoenix Area for a two-day event celebrating youth voices. You can either sign up to compete as either a part of a team or (if not on a team) as an individual.
