Call to Artists: Woodstock Community Center Street Mural Proposal

Brought to you by the Friends of the Woodstock Community Center (FWCC)

Help us transform the street directly outside our community hub (5905 SE 43rd Ave) into a vibrant, welcoming work of public art! Based on extensive survey feedback from our neighbors, we are seeking a lead mural artist to design a community-painted street mural, prepare the site, grid the design, and lead community paint days in early summer (~June) 2027.

Design Vision: A Love Letter to Woodstock

Our community survey revealed a clear, shared vision: a mural that feels like a vibrant love letter to our neighborhood. We ask artists to ground their mockups in the connection between our native flora and fauna and the ways we gather together in our favorite local spots.

Through a bright, eye-catching color palette, whimsy, and a touch of nostalgia, your design should stand as a welcoming visual landmark that evokes warmth, belonging, and local pride.

Key Design Pillars & Guidelines:

- Themes & Elements: Intertwine native flora and fauna with depictions of community gathering, shared history, and beloved local landmarks. (Please review our reference materials linked below for specific landmarks, species, and historical references requested by neighbors).

- Mood, Tone, & Style: Infuse the piece with whimsy and nostalgia, creating an inviting visual story. Because neighbors of all ages—including children—will help paint the mural, designs must be bold, graphic, colorful, and accessible for volunteer painting.

- Color & Impact: Utilize a vibrant, durable color palette designed to energize the street, draw the eye, and spark joy for passersby.

Project Specifications & Site Details

- Location: Street surface on SE 43rd Ave directly in front of the Woodstock Community Center (5905 SE 43rd Ave).

- Mural Dimensions: ~1,094 sq. ft. total area (49 ft. North–South × 23 ft. East–West).

- Site Constraints:

  • PBOT Design Criteria and painting supplies specifics found on the PBOT Street and Structure Painting information site.

  • The mural footprint is adjacent to an enclosed bike rack and marked accessible (disabled) parking space on the west side, as well as parallel street parking on the east side. The design must not overlap or obscure these city-painted parking lines or street markings.  However, it would be preferred that the design blend or enhance these services.

- Surface Prep: Preliminary street cleaning/washing is required prior to painting and must be factored into your cost estimate.
