Research has shown that natural sounds (birdsong, rain, insects) have beneficial physical, mental, and cognitive health impacts.
Starting with this prompt, CETI launches our first community science/datawalking/participatory research project Environmental Soundscapes to create a comprehensive sound map of the Portland metro region. Together we will gather sounds in our environment (natural, built, and human-influenced) and build a rich soundscape, exploring the various changes across places, times, seasons, and environments. And find unique sound signatures for the city and its spaces.
These recordings will be compiled into a public dataset for use by researchers, artists, policymakers, educators, and environmentalists and anybody interested. Research and creative projects will be designed and implemented in collaboration with volunteer participant-researchers.
We invite you all to join us in this endeavor. And please share with anybody interested. Reach out to hello@ceti.institute with questions, suggestions, and ideas for participants and partners.
