Open message to Minister for the National Disability Insurance Scheme, Senator the Hon Linda Reynolds CSC.
OPEN MESSAGE TO PROTECT THE NATIONAL DISABILITY INSURANCE SCHEME
We, the undersigned, support demands from people with disability to end the attacks on the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).
The NDIS was established through the dedication, hard work and foresight of people with disability, families, supporters and allies. It is a singular social reform of the 21st century in Australia, following in the footsteps of Medicare.
The NDIS must remain true to the values of empowerment, choice and control.
Millions of people support the NDIS, and want a better deal for people with disability and families. For this to happen, people with disability must be at the heart of decisions.
We welcome your engagement regarding the NDIS. We assert that you and your government must work to improve the scheme in a genuine consultation with no predetermined outcomes in accordance with the Terms of Engagement set out by Disabled Peoples Organisations and Disability Representative Organisations.
We the undersigned therefore,
Come together in shared admiration of the ambition, vision and persistence of people with disability and families who worked for decades to build a proper system of supports for people with disability culminating in a National Disability Insurance Scheme;
Unite with people with disability, families and supporters who oppose the proposed changes to the National Disability Insurance Scheme Act;
Call on the Federal Government to recommit to keeping people with disability at the centre of the Scheme;
Demand that the Federal Government immediately stop the roll-out of proposed changes and go back to the drawing board;
Oppose any moves to remove decision making about the NDIS from the state and territory governments.
