"An Ethnographer’s Odyssey: Researching China in Zambia"
Presenter: Ching Kwan Lee, Professor of Sociology, UCLA
Abstract: This seminar reconstructs the research processes and challenges that shaped the fieldwork and writing of my book "The Specter of Global China." I will discuss issues that are fundamental to the production of sociological knowledge: choices about the empirical and theoretical questions, the logic and cases of comparison, the politics and ethics of fieldwork, the mundane and the sublime in field encounters that facilitate and limit data collection. I hope to give participants a grounded, hands-on, and realistic (i.e. ethnographic!) look at academic research grappling with the Global China phenomenon.
