Professor Bernard Luk Hung Kay, former Vice President (Academic) passed away in March, 2016. Professor Luk advocated Liberal Studies Education, founded the Centre for Religious and Spirituality Education, enthusiastically supported Small Class Teaching and Research Centre and actively promoted student hall life. He was a dedicated educator who demonstrated principle-led-leadership and emphasized humanistic education. As a teacher, mentor and friend, he illuminated the souls of many students and colleagues alike.
Professor Luk was our moral compass. At the time when The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) was still known as The Hong Kong Institute of Education (HKIEd), Professor Luk stood up for academic freedom. In 2007, he published the Ten Thousand Words Letter that exposed government interference with the operation of the HKIEd. Even though he was put under extreme pressure, he insisted on revealing the truth about HKIEd being pressured to be subsumed under The Chinese University of Hong Kong and have its staff terminated.
Professor Luk devoted his life to Hong Kong with unyielding moral principles that earned our respect. Our Union keeps in touch with the EdUHK to discuss how to memorize Professor Luk. To perpetuate Professor Luk’s spirit and character, and to preserve our memories of him, we pledge for donations to make a plaque in naming a Phoenix Tree outside the Early Childhood Learning Centre that commemorates his life and teaching. To establish a tribute piece at the campus, our goal is to reach the target of $60,000 which would be transferred to the EdUHK Foundation. Any donations beyond this amount will be directed to study on the history of the HKIEd and support EdUHK student activity. Details are as follows:
