Since this should be a creative piece, we will assume every student wants to ENTERTAIN, but are you also filling other roles? For instance, if you need to do some research to write clearly and accurately, you are probably hoping to INFORM your reader. If your selection is about a societal, cultural, or natural concern, then you probably want to PERSUADE your reader to feel how you do. So what will be your overall purpose and HOW will you show that in a creative piece?

Deciding who your readers will be is super important and should be narrowed to specific age groups with any other descriptors like nationalities, gender, and/or economic niche. For instance, it could be ‘all tenth graders’ or ‘middle school girls’ or ‘high school students interested in science fiction’. Having a readership in mind will help you with everything from diction to characterization to setting. Who will your reader be? Write a sentence which includes at least THREE, specific details describing the audience to whom you wish to appeal.
