Teaching the Common Core Through Environmental Literacy

Teaching the Common Core Through Environmental Literacy will provide dynamic strategies, projects, and lessons that focus on hands-on, inquiry-based, experiential learning that you can apply not only to Common Core but to Next Generation Science Standards, environmental studies, biology, CoSTEM Career, and Tech Ed Pathways. The seminar is open to preK-12 educators.

The first seminar is Saturday, October 25, 2014, 8:30 AM-12:30 PM, at the University of Missouri – Kansas City.

Registration is $40.00. Attendees will earn 4 professional development credit hours per seminar.

8:30 -- 8:45 Registration

8:45 – 9:10 Stories Matter - Molly Postlewait & Elaine Giessel
Keynote presenters will illustrate how costumed character depiction and storytelling promote understanding, create personal connections, and encourage empathy all while enhancing environmental literacy.

9:15 – 10:45 - Session 1
• Mysterious Stream, An Ecological Adventure - Cheri Miller, grades: 3-5
Will the mysterious stream continue to be able to support all the life forms which rely on it? This session will use a mock stream ecosystem to provide a hands-on investigation. Reviewing the evidence recorded and comparing with their group, participants can help write/right the future of the mysterious stream.
• Hittin’ the Bottle - John Dorroh, grades: 6-8
A mini-compost chamber, fruit fly farm, terrarium, or fermentation chamber that shows osmosis and density changes in kimchee -- who knew that a plastic soda bottle could be so versatile? This session suggests several possibilities for educators to use writing and reading to write into and out of projects that utilize plastic soda bottles.

11:00- 12:30 - Session 2
• Investigating Pollinators in the Schoolyard - Teresa Woods, grades: 3-5
Did you know that the decline of pollinator communities threatens ecosystems, agricultural systems and human health? Participants will learn ways to engage students in exploring and understanding the fascinating world of flowers and their pollinators, and the importance of their interactions.
• Engineering In Nature: Bringing Engineering Into Life and Biological Sciences - Diane Maddox & Alaine Hudlin, grades: 6-8
Explore the history of dams and how they affect watershed dynamics. You can use this project-based learning unit with your students as soon as you complete this hands-on, interdisciplinary session. Each participant will walk out with a watershed kit, lesson extensions and more.
